Nick Kingswell
“A stunning sonic exploration…” - Earmilk
Growing up in Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia, Nick Kingswell was surrounded by the sights and sounds of music, his parents exposing him to artists such as Carole King and Leonard Cohen. So, it seemed like a natural progression to start his own band at the tender age of 12 years old. Going on to win a nationwide talent contest and a single contract with SONY BMG Australia, Nick’s future in the industry was firmly established.
Working as a session guitarist for seven years, playing for the likes of Guy Sebastian, The McClymonts and Samantha Jade, Nick moved to London intent on making a name of himself as a solo artist. The culmination of his hard work was borne through the release of debut album, Brontide, picking up plethora of positive reviews in the process.
Now, the Australian is preparing to release his latest single, Deep Blue, on 30th July 2021. Deep Blue finds Nick seamlessly combining the intimate indie of Hovvdy with the vulnerability of Lomelda and the sparse atmospherics of RY X. The single tackles themes associated with depression and anxiety, relating the emotion of feeling blue to that of the often hazy, cloudy and confusing feeling we experience upon waking from a dream. The instrumental represents this emotion as Nick experiments with sound, conveying the sense of being underwater, before culminating in a grand, expansive final chorus signifying acceptance and understanding.
The release of debut album Brontide, elevated Nick’s status as a solo artist. Working with producer James Bunton(Donovan Woods) in Toronto, Canada, Nick’s distinct, organic sound saw support coming from the likes of Earmilk, Variance Magazine, Atwood Magazine, Pop Dust as well as a recent live session on BBC Radio Cornwall.
Deep Blue will be accompanied by b-side, ‘Money In The Bank’, out on 30th July 2021.
