“…Costello and his cohorts are definitely ones to watch.” - Bandcamp
Scottish band, Graham Costello’s STRATA, are delighted to release their debut album OBELISK, out now via bpqd Records.
Fusing elements of jazz, minimalism, progressive, math and noise-rock, STRATA are not your typical band set-up. A strong and unique voice in the UK jazz scene, their ability to create dramatic, cerebral soundscapes and marry them with mesmerising grooves is unparalleled. Indeed, despite their relative infancy as an ensemble, STRATA have already made an indelible impact upon the Scottish jazz scene and beyond having been named ‘One’s to Watch 2019’ by Jazzwise as well as gaining nominations for both Best Band and Best EP/Album at this year’s Scottish Jazz Awards.
Exploring polyrhythm, collective groove and improvisation, OBELISK is characterised by the effortless integration and exploration of sumptuous brass tones, expertly delivered guitar segments, mesmerising piano and virtuosic drumming courtesy of Graham Costello himself. OBELISK is an exhilarating journey into the mind of one of the most exciting young jazz players in the now vibrant world of the Scottish jazz scene.
STRATA are comprised of Harry Weir (tenor saxophone), Liam Shortall (trombone), Fergus McCreadie (piano), Joe Williamson (guitar), Mark Hendry (electric bass) and Graham Costello (drums & composition), and have been honing their sound and performing to audiences since 2016. As well as playing sell out concerts and standing ovations at Scotland’s top jazz festivals including Edinburgh Jazz Festival and BBC Jazz Nights at the Quay, STRATA have been running their own monthly residency at Glasgow’s renowned independent venue Bloc. Known for their strong DIY ethic, STRATA have already made their mark with notable press coming from BBC Scotland, The Herald, The Scotsman, Bandcamp, London Jazz News and The Skinny. Now, with OBELISK due to drop in February 2019, STRATA are aiming to continue their rise as they share their unique, dynamic sound with the world.
